Walls, ceilings, trim and doors repainted with the prep done properly, usually two to five days for a whole house.
Wood siding, trim, soffits, doors and stucco repainted in the short Ottawa season, with the prep that makes it last.
Spraying existing kitchen cabinets to a factory-like finish for a fraction of replacement, usually five to eight days.
Cracks, nail pops, water damage and stippled ceilings made flat and sound before any paint goes near them.
Pressure-treated and cedar decks and fences cleaned, brightened and coated before the Ottawa winter gets at them.
Ottawa asks more of a paint job than most Canadian cities do. Indoor relative humidity can sit near 45 per cent in August and fall below 20 per cent in a cold February, and framing lumber moves with it. That annual cycle is what opens drywall joints, splits the caulking where trim meets wall and lifts ceilings away from interior partitions every winter.
Outside, the working season runs roughly mid-May to early October, because most exterior coatings need the surface and the overnight air above about 10 degrees Celsius while they cure. Then the house spends five months under snow and through dozens of freeze-thaw cycles, which is why caulking fails before paint does and why south and west elevations fade a cycle ahead of the rest.
Age matters by neighbourhood. The suburbs built since 1990 are drywall and latex throughout and are straightforward. The core, Westboro, Hintonburg, the Glebe and Old Ottawa South bring plaster walls, oil-based trim and, in anything built before 1960, a real likelihood of lead-based paint. Health Canada's guidance on that is specific and it changes both the method and the price.
We are an information site. We set out what the work involves, what it costs here and what to ask, and we connect you with a local contractor who does the painting. We do not paint houses ourselves, and no painter in Ontario holds a licence, because the province does not issue one.
